Kimono or Yukata?

Kimono or Yukata?

Kimono or Yukata?

A Japanese kimono and a yukata are traditional garments with distinct purposes and cultural significance.

The kimono is a formal, iconic piece of clothing. Typically made of silk, it is reserved for special occasions like weddings, tea ceremonies, and festivals. Kimonos have intricate designs and are worn with various accessories, such as an obi (wide belt) and zori (sandals). They reflect social status, with different colors, patterns, and sleeve lengths denoting age and marital status. Kimonos are a symbol of Japanese heritage, embodying a sense of tradition and formality.

Our Universal Robes kimonos are casualized robes, more like yukata. They are designed with the hope that people all over the world will be able to enjoy the gorgeousness that only a kimono can offer in a more casual manner. For this reason, we use not only silk, but also satin cotton and polyester.

In contrast, a yukata is a more casual, lightweight robe often made from cotton. It's commonly worn in hot weather, like during summer festivals or when relaxing at an onsen (hot spring). Yukatas have simpler patterns and are easier to put on, usually tied with a narrow obi. They are also popular for tourists at ryokans (traditional inns). Yukatas represent comfort and leisure, offering a more relaxed alternative to the formal kimono.

Both garments exemplify Japan's rich cultural heritage, with the kimono embodying elegance and the yukata embracing comfort and simplicity. Universal Robes' kimonos and yukatas are more practical robes that go beyond the original concept and can be worn casually dressed down by anyone. Why not treat yourself and add them to your wardrobe?
